Flower Bricks Explained
Flower bricks are functional vessels designed to hold and support individual or groups of flower stems. Their multiple openings guide each stem into place, making it easy to create balanced, sculptural arrangements without floral foam or complex tools.
Originating in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, flower bricks became popular as fresh flowers entered everyday domestic life. Ceramic versions were especially valued for their weight and stability. While distinct from Japanese ikebana tools, flower bricks share a similar philosophy: honoring each stem through simplicity, balance, and intention.
Today, flower bricks are both practical and decorative; architectural objects when empty, and living compositions when in use.
